The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team dropped its conference opener at home to Shasta on Saturday afternoon, falling 74-47.

The Corsairs had just six players suit up for the game, and, according to interim head coach Darren Turpin, the visitors wore them down as the game went on.

“We came out and played competitive basketball for the most part,” said Turpin, who was overseeing his first game with the team after taking over from the departed Aaron Hungerford.

Hungerford was let go by the Corsairs last week for violating department policies.

Against Shasta, the Corsairs scored 35 of their 47 points in the second half.

“After halftime we continued to play solid defense and got a rhythm on offense,” Turpin said.

With the loss, the Corsairs drop to 0-16 on the season.

Shasta improved to 3-13.

The CR men will host Siskiyous next Saturday at 4 p.m.
