An 18-year-old Crescent City man was killed after his vehicle hit a piece of heavy equipment on Lower Lake Road on Tuesday.

The Del Norte County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death of Dylan Manuel Cervantes, Sheriff’s Cmdr. Bill Steven said. The collision occurred at about 9:05 p.m. Tuesday on the 5000 block of Lower Lake Road in the Fort Dick area, Steven said. The next of kin has been notified, Steven said

On July 9, 2019, at approximately 2105 hours, Party #1 (P-1, Cervantes) was traveling in Vehicle #1 (V-1, Ford) northbound on Lower Lake Road north of Mud Hen Village Road. An unoccupied John Deere Loader was partially blocking the northbound lane of Lower Lake Road.For unknown reasons, P-1 failed to observe or avoid the John Deere Loader, causing the front of V-1 to collide with the John Deere Loader bucket. P-1 was transported by Del Norte Ambulance to Sutter Coast Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased due to injuries suffered from the crash. [Ed.: CHP correction.] P-1 suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The cause of this crash is still under investigation.

Crescent City Fire, Cal-Fire, and the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
