The Northern Humboldt Giants were unable to overcome a poor start at Brookings on Monday in a 10-6 loss in American Legion baseball.
The Giants scored twice in the top of the first inning, but gave up five runs in the bottom half of the inning and trailed 7-2 after two.
Kaden Ritter and Dean Wellik led the way at the plate with two hits each for the Giants, who out-hit their opponents 9-7, including a double by Ritter.
Ritter also took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs on four hits and one walk in just one inning, before being relieved by Porter Price.
Price pitched five innings, giving up five runs on three hits and seven walks, while striking out four.
The Giants’ bats made some noise with Kyler Carr, Alex Gorge and Asher Meadows all hitting doubles, while Mason Nichols and Vincent Agliolo rounded out a nine-hit team performance.
The Giants will open the District tournament in Fortuna on Friday against the Southern Humboldt 76ers at 4:30 p.m.
