A group of chanting, sign-wielding protesters are currently marching through the streets of downtown Eureka following a “Close the Camps” rally in front of the Humboldt County Courthouse. The group hopes to draw attention to the abhorrent conditions at detention facilities holding migrant children and families.

The march comes during intense national debate over migrant facilities mostly along the U.S.-Mexico border. Today the DHS Office of the Inspector general published a report featuring photos chronicling severe overcrowding in holding facilities. In some cases children were forced to sleep on concrete floors without access to water.
