UPDATE, 6:20 p.m.: Press release from the Eureka Police Department:

On June 12, 2019 at approximately 4:08 pm, Officers from the Eureka Police Department were dispatched to a report of shots fired in an alley near the intersection of W. Grant and Pine Streets. It was reported that there were two males on scene. Officers responded and secured the scene. During the search of the scene items were located that lead investigators to believe shots had been fired as reported.

A subject matching the description of one of the males that was on scene, at the time of the shooting, was seen running near Broadway and Wabash. This subject was only described as a white male adult wearing all black clothing. A citizen witnessed this subject throw an unknown item into a yard near this intersection. Officers entered the yard and located a handgun. At this time, it is unknown if the handgun is related to the shooting investigation. 

Officers and Detectives did a public safety canvas near the scene of the shooting for victims and witnesses and no victims were located.

This is an ongoing, active investigation and additional information may be released at a later time. Anyone who may have additional information regarding this incident is urged to contact Detective Bise at 441-4109. Detective Bise would especially like to speak to the citizen who witnessed the subject throwing the item into the yard.

UPDATE, 4:32 p.m.: A firearm believed to be associated with this incident has been located, according to scanner traffic. Evidence techs have arrived at the scene.

UPDATE, 4:27 p.m.: The suspect is being described only as a white male wearing black clothing. A block of Washington Street between California and Pine has been blocked off. Police tape is going up.

The Eureka Police Department is swarming the West Side neighborhood after reports of shots fired near the Jefferson Project minutes ago.

Police have set up a perimeter around the location of the shooting, which appears to have taken place in an alley between Washington and Grant streets, just off of California Avenue.

According to scanner traffic, a witness reported hearing two gunshots and saw a person fleeing southbound on foot. Two shell casings have been found on Washington.
