File photo – St. Bernard’s standout Bode Joyner will get the start on the mound for the Humboldt Eagles when they play the Northern Humboldt Giants in American Legion action on Monday evening.

The Humboldt Eagles 17U American Legion baseball team split a season-opening doubleheader against Shasta in Eureka on Sunday.

The Eagles dropped the opener 5-2 but bounced back to take a 2-0 win in the nightcap, with pitchers Brayden Youkey and Nick Dugan combining for the shutout.

Youkey got the win, giving up just two hits in five innings work and striking out five, while Dugan came in to record the save, striking out five in two innings.

At the plate, Zac Anderson led the way and was 2-for-3, while Hayden Bode, Ben Tehan and Bode Joyner each had a hit, and Keenan Morris drove in a run.

In the opener, Bode took the loss on the hill despite striking out seven in 4.2 innings.

Ethan Pesch struck out three in 2.1 innings in relief.

At the plate, Joyner, Lane Thrap and Parker Rodgers each had a hit, with Joyner also driving in a run.

The Eagles will be back in action Monday evening when they host the Northern Humboldt Giants at the Arcata Babe Ruth Field at 5 p.m.

Joyner will get the start on the mound for the Eagles.
