The College or the Redwoods softball team secured its first doubleheader sweep of the season, improving to 4-4 after taking two games at Mendocino College on Friday.

The CR baseball team, meanwhile, will host Feather River in a three-game series at Bomber Field across from the Redwood Acres this weekend, playing two on Saturday and one on Sunday.

In softball, the Corsairs secured the sweep when outfielder Bronwyn Gilfillan made a great defensive play with a catch over the fence in the bottom of the eighth inning, helping the visitors hold on for a 5-4 win.

Dakota Small broke the deadlock and gave the Corsairs the lead in the top half of the inning on an RBI sac fly.

Arcata’s Small was one of six players with a hit in the win, finishing with a double while driving in three runs.

The Corsairs scored three runs in the top of the second and led for much of the game, before the Eagles scored single runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to force extra innings.

Winning pitcher Ashely Stockwell struck out five, while allowing 10 hits and walking none.

Stockwell also had a hit, along with Gilfillan, Amy Reyes, Pheoebe Marsh and Lindsey Scott.

Earlier in the day, the Corsairs scored single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to pull out a 4-2 win.

Reyes, Marsh and Scott each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, with the latter doubling.

Stockwell was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Lily Peterson finished with a hit.

Scott pitched the win.

The Corsairs are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Chabot on Saturday.

The CR men will resume conference play at home to Feather River, with game one of Saturday’s doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Corsairs come into the game at 1-2 in the Golden Valley Conference and 2-11 overall, while Feather River is 2-0 and 13-4.

The showdown features CR head coach and current Humboldt Crabs assistant coach Brad Morgan going up against FR head coach Ryan Dettman, a former Crabs assistant.
