John has passed on and has joined his mom and dad, Frances and Stanley Shaffer; his grandparents, Tilda and George Lindsey; and uncle, Fred Lindsey.

John was born in Longview, Washington and passed away February 23, 2019 at home in Fortuna. John graduated from Fortuna High School class of 1953. John enjoyed meeting with his friends from high school over the years for many lunches, and would have had a 66-year class reunion this year. John worked the majority of his life in the timber industry at Eel River Sawmills as a log loader operator. Until late in his life, John never missed quail and deer hunting season, no matter what. It can be said that John cut, hauled and delivered more fire wood than you could shake a stick at.

John is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter, Julie Quilligan (Jay); son James (Fileta); six grandchildren, Tiffany (Phillip) Smith, Crystal (Dustin) Pamploma, Jessica (Jason) Patterson, Nicole Shaffer, Jonathan Shafer and Jamie Shaffer; and six great-grandchildren. Family was special to John.

He also is survived by his sister Dorothy Scalvini; niece Cathy Scalvini; great-nieces Emma Scalvini and Loran Scalvini; his sister, Helen Demello; niece Carrie Jennings (Rick); and nephew, Eugene Demello.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Stanley Shaffer; grandparents Tilda and George Lindsey; uncle Fred Lindsey; brothers-in-law Rocco Scalvini and Eugene Demello; and his special friend, Derwin Hoisington.

Services for John W. Shaffer will be Friday, March 1, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Goble’s Mortuary in Fortuna. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. until service begins. Luncheon will follow at the Fortuna Fire Department Hall.
