Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On March 13, 2019, at about 11:30 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area of the Fairhaven T, off of New Navy Base Road, for the report of a suspicious cylinder found on Samoa Beach.

A beach-goer discovered the cylinder, which was later determined to be a marine flare. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team consulted with the Beale Air Force Base EOD Unit to determine the type of flare found and the proper procedure for rendering such a flare safe.

New Navy Base Road was temporarily shut down while EOD deputies rendered the flare safe.
