The College of the Redwoods track and field team lacks the depth to challenge for a conference title this season, but the Corsairs continue to set several impressive individual marks.

On Saturday, the Redwoods athletes traveled to compete at the Hornet Invite at Sacramento State, with several top-class NCAA Division-I programs on hand.

And head coach Reed Elmore was more than pleased with his athletes’ showing.

“The season’s been great,” Elmore said. “We’re small, but we’ve got some good talent and the attitude’s been really great

“It’s a building year in terms of numbers, but not talent.”

Grant Vanemmerik turned in one of the most impressive CR marks of the day in the men’s 400 meters, placing ninth in a time of 49.29 seconds.

Vanemmerik was also one of several CR sprinters to compete in the 200 meters, a group led by Earl Buchanan, who placed 18th in a time of 22.32.

Vanemmerik timed a 22.46, followed by teammates DJ Snowton (23.85) and Leo Ashford (23.9).

Snowton was one of three Corsairs with an impressive showing in the 100 meters, finishing in a time of 11.59, behind teammates Buchanan (11.44) and Tana Liana, who timed an 11.53.

In women’s action, Bobbie Purify ran a 13.01 in the 100 meters, while Katie Bergor competed in both the 200m (29.25) and the 400m (1:06.17).

In the women’s 1,500m, Maria Overton ran a 5:24.

In the men’s javelin, TJ Tome had a throw of 122 feet, while teammate Chee Shorty threw a 130.

In the men’s discus, Jarid Jorgensen had a throw of 143 feet.

“Our athletes performed really well,” Elmore said. “When you’re getting PRs, it’s a stellar weekend.

“Things are starting to come together for us.”

The Corsairs will travel the short distance to compete at HSU on Saturday.
