Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Eureka head coach Michael Harvey, pictured talking to two of his players, will welcome two new assistants to the program for next season.

The Eureka Loggers have added some experience to their coaching staff in girls basketball, with head coach Michael Harvey welcoming two new assistants to the program for next season.

Harvey, who took over the program last year, came close to winning the Big 5 in his first campaign with the team, before finishing second to Del Norte.

On Friday he announced former Fortuna head coach Jesse Genaro will join the Loggers as an assistant coach, along with former Del Norte and College of the Redwoods player Romeo Steele.

“I’m pretty excited about having the opportunity to get both of them,” Harvey said.

Taylor Schafer, a former Eureka player, will also return to the staff after playing a pivotal role alongside Harvey last season.

The Loggers finished 21-11, making it all the way to the NorCal tournament.

“I think it was an adjustment coaching girls after coaching boys for so many years, and it was a learning process for me,” said Harvey, a long-time local basketball coach. “But I thought we did well. We did some good things.”

Genaro coached the Fortuna girls for the past three years, and had an overall record of 41-32, while making the North Coast Section playoffs twice.

Steele, who Harvey described as a “great skills and training coach,” was an assistant coach for Genaro at Fortuna.
