College of the Redwoods and Siskiyous were involved in a pair of one-run thrillers in softball on Sunday, with the two clubs splitting in Weed to open the Golden Valley Conference.
The home team scored four runs in the final two innings of the opener, overturning what had been a 6-1 deficit for a 7-6 win.
The Corsairs, however, answered in perfect fashion, coming from behind to score runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings of the second game to pull out a 3-2 win.
The victory ended a seven-game losing streak for the visitors, who improved to 5-11 on the season and 1-1 in conference.
Siskiyous is now 5-13 and 1-1.
Bronwyn Gilfillan, Juliana Ortega-Miranda and Adriana Chavez each finished with a pair of hits in the opener, including a triple by Gilfillan.
Ortega-Miranda, who is enjoying a strong freshman season, had two doubles and drove home three runs, while Chavez also drove home a run.
Pheobe Marsh added a double, while Amy Reyes rounded out an eight-hit team performance.
Ortega-Miranda took the loss in the pitcher’s circle in relief of starter Ashley Stockwell, who pitched the opening 5.1 innings with three strikeouts and zero walks.
In game two, the Corsairs out-hit the visitors 9-5, pulling out the dramatic win with the late surge.
Lindsey Scott had a big game, pitching the win and finishing 3-for-3 at the plate.
Scott tossed the complete game, striking out one, walking two and allowing just five hits.
Lily Peterson added a pair of hits on offense, while Stockwell had a triple and one of the team’s RBIs.
Chavez, Reyes and Marsh each also had a hit, with Reyes also driving home a score.
The Corsairs will continue conference play with doubleheaders at both Butte and Feather River this coming weekend, before finally playing their home opener against Lassen on April 5.
In baseball, meanwhile, visiting Lassen completed a weekend sweep of CR at Bomber Field with a 20-5 win on Sunday.
The Corsairs, who are 3-22 on the season and 2-13 in conference, lost a pair of one-run games to Lassen on Saturday.
CR is scheduled to host Butte this weekend.
