Former Arcata standout Thomas Nelson continued to set the tone for the College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team with another big offensive performance on Thursday night, as the Corsairs returned to winning ways with an 83-72 win over Modesto at the Mendocino tournament.
It was the the third time this year this team has responded to a loss with an immediate victory, and the Corsairs have yet to drop two in a row.
Nelson scored a team-high 29 points, including 25 in the second half alone, while teammate Drew Gillette continued to look comfortable at the collegiate level, scoring 17 points.
Nelson leads the team with 17.5 points a game, while Gillette has caught fire lately, scoring 48 points in his past two games.
With the win, the Corsairs improved to 6-3 on the season.
Donald Willis and Bradley Willis each also had a big night as the Corsairs turned in a balanced offensive performance.
Donald finished with 13 points, while Bradley had 11.
A fourth former Fortuna player, Zac Claus, also had a big night, finishing with 10 points.
Gillette and the Willis twins also played for the Huskies last season.
The CR men will continue play at the Mendocino College tournament in Ukiah on Friday, when they play Sacramento City at 5 p.m.
