Can’t bare to wait a whole week for Alex Cappa’s second NFL start? You won’t have to.
Cappa’s Buccaneers face off against the Carolina Panthers tonight for Thursday Night Football.
In his first NFL start against the 49ers on Sunday, the former Lumberjack showed that he just might live up to the hype of being taken in the third round of last year’s NFL Draft.
Lots of people are wondering about the 2nd year RG from Humboldt State. He was a 3rd round pick in 2018 and had a reputation for being a nasty run blocker. Here he double teams the DT with the RT then gets to the 2nd level and pancakes the LB. Love seeing this! #Bucsfilm2019wk1 pic.twitter.com/otk2doP5KF

Gameplay analysis provided by blogger Steven Cheah of Barstool Sports shows that Cappa thrived at both run blocking and pass protection.
A big area of improvement was his ability to hold up in pass protection, here Cappa is able to successfully pick up a stunt here with the rest of his interior OL while both LBs drop into coverage after sugaring the A gap. Great communication & teamwork. #Bucsfilm2019wk1 pic.twitter.com/pyIjtKIias

The film also shows he gave up a big, ugly sack in the 4th quarter when defensive tackle Arik Armstead, a 2015 first-round pick, bear walked him straight into quarterback Jameis Winston.
It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for Cappa on this day. A huge play in the 4th quarter with the Bucs trying to make a comeback. He’s he’s both late to shoot his hands and too wide with his hand placement, giving up his chest to the DT who gets the sack. #Bucsfilm2019wk1 pic.twitter.com/1Q9xjdg0y4

Cappa may have one of the biggest tests of his young career tonight, as he’ll likely help contain Panthers’ six-time Pro Bowler Gerald McCoy, who was drafted third overall in the 2010 NFL Draft by none other than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This will be McCoy’s first game against his former longtime team.
Unfortunately, the NFL discontinued its fun Thursday Night Color Rush games last year, where each team wore explosive neon colors. But keep an eye out for Cappa, #65, in a plain old white-on-white Bucs uniform tonight.
Kickoff is at 5:20 p.m. on the NFL Network.
