The Eureka boys continued to show why they’re legitimate challengers in the H-DNL this year with a team win in cross country at Saturday’s Clam Beach Invitational.

Fortuna’s Collin Stockwell took first overall at the annual beach race, with Eureka’s Ian Bennett spearheading the Loggers charge in second.

The Eureka girls also won their team competition, giving the high-flying Loggers a sweep at an event that also featured runners from Fortuna, Arcata and McKinleyville, as well as seven out-of-area schools.

The Eureka girls were led by KyleeAnna Zink-Clinton in third, behind race winner Jenna Justice of Etna, who timed a 21:08 in the three-mile event.

The Eureka girls scored 47 team points, beating out St. Mary’s (54), Fortuna (83) and Red Bluff (84).

The Loggers won the boys event with 36 points, followed by Fortuna (56) and Ukiah (90).

The Eureka JVs also fared well at an event that featured varsity, JV, middle school and elementary school races.

Josh Sweet led the younger Eureka runners with a fourth-place finish.

Del Norte’s Scott pushes Arcata No. 1 Reiner all the way

The Arcata Tigers improved to 6-0 in H-DNL girls tennis with a 9-0 sweep of Del Norte on Saturday.

Aimee Reiner won at No. 1 singles for the Tigers, but had to battle against Del Norte’s Danika Scott, before eventually taking the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Keona Gutierrez, Casey McAtasney and Sydni Sobota each won their singles matches in straight sets for Arcata, while Kendra Flint defeated Emily Feeney 8-5 and Makayla Bernald got the better of Liz Ward 8-6.

The Tigers play at St. Bernard’s on Tuesday.
