A 32-year-old man was tased and arrested after leading police on an early morning car chase through the hills of Arcata today that nearly continued into Redwood Park.
Lt. Todd Dokweiler of the Arcata Police Department told the Outpost that officers attempted to pull over Arcata resident Zackary Scudder at approximately 3 a.m., when they observed him driving recklessly on Alliance Road.
Scudder reportedly fled the traffic stop and was able to evade the pursuing officers for several minutes until officers found the suspect driving near the intersection of Bayview and 11th Streets and reinitiated the chase.
Dockweiler said that the suspect then fled east on 11th street and drove directly into a bollard post that specifically prevents vehicles from driving along Arcata Community Forest trails and into Redwood Park.
“[Scudder hit the pole] hard enough to disabled the vehicle,” Dockweiler said. “Then the driver was taken into custody after a bit of a struggle.”
Dockweiler said that officers were able to subdue Scudder using a taser and that he was arrested for evading police, obstruction, DUI and probation violations.
As of this afternoon, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Samantha Karges said that Scudder has not been booked into the Humboldt County jail.
