Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:
On 4/29/2020 at 10:40 P.M. Humboldt Bay Fire was dispatched to a reported structure fire at Third and P Streets in Eureka. The first arriving units found heavy smoke coming from the front door of a single-story duplex apartment building, and heavy fire within the interior of the structure.
A conscious victim was found lying outside the front door. Nearby neighbors assisted the subject to a safe location where Humboldt Bay Fire personnel and Eureka Police Officers assessed the patient. The patient was subsequently transported by City Ambulance to the hospital for further treatment. Fire personnel simultaneously attacked the fire and searched the rest of the building for additional victims with no other victims being found.
While firefighters were battling the blaze, an electrical line dropped near them, hindering their access around the structure. Pacific Gas and Electric responded to the scene and secured the energized line.
Humboldt Bay Fire had the fire controlled within 20 minutes. Fire personnel remained on scene for approximately two hours. The fire is under investigation but appears to be accidental at this time, possibly starting in the kitchen area.
Damages to the structure are estimated to be $125,000. Humboldt Bay Fire wants to remind everyone to always maintain clearance around cooking appliances and to never leave a stove unattended while cooking.
