Shoppers were evacuated from the Fortuna Safeway shortly before 11 a.m. today due to a freon leak coming from one of the stores’ freezers.

Fortuna Fire Chief Lon Winburn told the Outpost that the store was evacuated for approximately 30 minutes while the broken unit was shut down and the store was ventilated.

“There’s not much to report,” Winburn said. “We had a pipe with a hole in it in one of the freezer units. By the time they evacuated folks and shut the compressor down, the repairman showed up.”

No injuries were reported as a result of the leak and the store has since been reopened.
