Douglas William Clayton passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 14th, 2020. He was born in Santa Barbara on August 28, 1923 to Leslie and Thirza (Hobbs) Clayton. He was the oldest of three boys.

The family moved to Bakersfield, where he played baseball and graduated from the First East Bakersfield High School, class of 1941. He went on to attend Cal Berkeley, where he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp Officers Training Program receiving his commission as a 1st Lt stationed in Guam and Beijing.

A Berkeley graduate, he went on to attain his degree in forestry engineering. He continued his passion for baseball where his team at Cal went on to win the very first college world series winning the National Championship against Yale. By the way, the Yale captain was the future 41st President, George W. Bush.

It was at Berkeley that he met his loving, beautiful wife of 66 years Elizabeth (Bette). They married and moved to Eureka. There he worked within the lumber business as a manager and consultant for 26 years. He also owned and operated his own company, Clayton-Albright.

Doug continued his love for baseball, playing for the Humboldt Crabs as a catcher.

His other passions were fly-fishing, designing and tying flies, and construction. He and Bette built two homes. They both loved the outdoors and to travel.

Doug is proceeded in death by his wife Bette, his granddaughter Heather Carpenter, his Grandson Christopher Carpenter, his two brothers Stillman and Dick, and his beloved dog Sara.

He is survived by his daughters Cydney (Edward Carpenter), Susan (Carl Suarino); his son, Christopher (Cathy Tonini); his grandchildren, Danny Clayton (Ashley Crnich), Andy Clayton, and Heidi Carpenter. Last but certainly not least, his great-grandson Carson Clayton.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
