Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:

On the evening of July 4 th/ 5 th , 2020, Humboldt Bay Responded to 3 reported Structure Fires within 2 hours. The first Structure Fire was reported at 2331 hrs at the 3400 block of O St and caused minor damage to a large RV. The second fire was reported at 0041hrs at the 1700 block of K St and caused minor damage to the exterior of a residence. Both fires were determined to be caused by the improper disposal of legal fireworks after use into exterior trash cans.

The third Structure Fire was reported at 0144 hrs at the 3800 block of Pennsylvania Ave in the Myrtletown area. The first arriving engine company reported a detached garage to the rear the residence fully involved in fire and threatening exposures. Fire crews initiated a defensive fire attack with multiple hose lines to protect neighboring exposures and extinguish the fire. During the initial fire attack, live power lines burned and fell to the ground near the exposure buildings firefighters were trying to protect. The fire was controlled in 45 minutes and the 2 car garage was complete loss. A vehicle in the garage, another vehicle parked near the garage and a neighboring RV were also heavily damaged by the fire. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings and homes.

There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. Damage is estimated at $125,000 and the cause of the fire is undetermined after the investigation. Humboldt Bay Fire responded with 3 Engines, 1 Truck and 2 Chief officers. Firefighters remained on scene for 3 hours to completely extinguish the fire. Humboldt Bay Fire would like tothank PG&E and City Ambulance for their assistance during the incident.

Humboldt Bay Fire wants to remind everyone to dispose of used fireworks in a bucket filled with water to ensure the devices are completely extinguished prior to discarding in a trash receptacle.
