UPDATE, 1:00 p.m.: The fire is under control. Firefighters are still on scene and J and Sixths Streets are still closed to traffic.
Arcata Fire Battalion Chief Sean Campbell told the Outpost that a family of six lives in the home and has been displaced by the fire, which caused extensive damage to the building. The fire is believed to have originated in the house’s attic, but the cause is still under investigation, Campbell said.

ORIGINAL POST: Firefighters from Arcata Fire District, Blue Lake Fire and Humboldt Bay Fire are currently on the scene of a spreading fire at a home at the corner of J and Sixth Streets in Arcata, right across the street from the Humboldt Patient Resource Center (HPRC). Smoke and flames could be seen billowing from the building as crews attempt to chainsaw their way through the roof to provide ventilation.
Ed Laidlaw, fire marshal with Arcata Fire District, tells the Outpost that all occupants are out of the house and accounted for.
Both J and Sixth streets are currently closed to traffic. PG&E is on scene to cut gas and electricity to the building.
