Down by one with five seconds left on the clock, St. Bernard’s Academy only needed a two-pointer to win the game and advance to the second round of the Crescent City Jaycees basketball tournament on Friday.
But when St. Bernard’s junior high school student J.J. Wilson found himself triple-teamed at half-court by Bethel Christian’s smothering full-court-press defense with less than a second left on the clock, he wound up and let it fly.
The buzzer sounded and the crowd exploded as the ball swished in to win the game. Shooting hand still raised, Wilson was swarmed by his teammates and coaches at center court in celebration of the big win.
St. Bernard’s went on to lose its next game to tournament champions Hoopa Valley Elementary School, but Wilson’s big shot remained the talk of the tournament.
