Eureka Police Department press release:

On March 7, 2020, at about 11:45 p.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to the 2100 block of Broadway for the report of a collision involving a vehicle and two pedestrians, one being an infant in a stroller.

Officers arrived on scene and found an adult female pedestrian down in the roadway and an infant in a stroller unharmed. The female pedestrian was transported to the hospital by ambulance where she was pronounced deceased. The next of kin has been notified and the female has been identified as Kelsey Diffin (25 of Eureka).

The driver of the involved vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. Drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be a factor and no arrests were made.

Based on the initial investigation, it appears Diffin was pushing her infant child in a stroller across Broadway midblock some distance from the nearest crosswalk. The driver of the involved vehicle was traveling north on Broadway and did not see Diffin and the stroller approaching and was unable to avoid the collision.

This is an ongoing investigation and further details will be released as appropriate. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Sergeant Gary Whitmer at (707) 441-4306.
