Donald Wesley Richardson
Born October 18, 1948. Died May 1, 2020

Don was born in Scotia to Claude and Peggy (Rogers) Richardson, the second of their three children. He attended Ferndale Schools, and graduated from Ferndale High in 1966. Don served overseas in the United States Army in Vietnam. Upon his return he enjoyed Art and Photography Classes at College of the Redwoods. A talented artist, Don loved to sit with his children, Annie and Fred, teaching them to draw and paint. He always encouraged them to, “take your time, do a good job, and have fun.”

Most of Don’s working years were spent in the logging industry. His free time he enjoyed spending at home in Ferndale, at “Fort Stone.” Don always had a project going in the garden, or in his shop, which he filled with his artwork, and all kinds of treasures. He continued to enjoy photography for many years and was always taking pictures at home or at the ranch.

Aside from home, his favorite place to be was the Richardson family ranch, which his great-grandparents homesteaded at Bear River. Don researched and built his own one room log cabin at the ranch, along with help from his family. This is where he was happiest, spending time with his family and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Peggy Richardson, and by his nephew, Donnie Richardson. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dianna, and his children Annie Dougherty (Scott), and Fred Richardson. Also, survived by his older brother Bill (Laura), younger sister Jan, and nieces and nephews, Denise Richardson-Edwards, Ken Richardson (Sharon), James Richardson (Hailey), Troy Hubner (Ahna), Teresa Dodge, and their families. Don also is survived by his brother-in-law, Leon Matyshock, and numerous cousins descended from the Richardson and Rogers families.

After several years of declining health, Don chose not to return to the hospital. He died at home surrounded by his family. Don inspired his family and friends to sit back and enjoy all of life’s little pleasures. He rarely said “goodbye”, instead he would finish every conversation with “have fun”.
