On May 16, 2020, at about 9:07 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 7500 block of Zanes Road, in the county’s jurisdiction of Eureka, for the report of armed, suspicious subjects trespassing on private property with possible criminal intent.

Deputies arrived on scene and located a dark colored Chevrolet pickup truck partially submerged in a body of water, with two men standing just outside the vehicle. The two subjects, later identified as 37-year-old Matthew John Robert Loveless and 52-year-old Kevin Scott Perrine, were taken into custody after briefly resisting deputies. In and around the vehicle, deputies located five firearms.

During a search of Loveless, deputies located ammunition. During a search of Perrine, deputies located ammunition and approximately one gram of methamphetamine.

Upon further investigation, deputies learned that a third suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Kelly John Carroll, had fled the scene upon deputies’ arrival. Deputies deployed HCSO K9 Yahtzee to search the area for Carroll. K9 Yahtzee successfully located and apprehended Carroll hiding in brush nearby.

Loveless was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm (PC 29800(a)), person prohibited in possession of ammunition (PC 30305(a)), resisting a peace officer (PC 148(a)(1)) and trespassing (PC 602(o)).

Perrine was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm (PC 29800(a)(1)), person prohibited in possession of ammunition (PC 30305(a)), resisting a peace officer (PC 148(a)(1)), possession of a controlled substance (HS 11377(a)) and trespassing (PC 602(o)).

Carroll was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of resisting a peace officer (PC 148(a)(1)), trespassing (PC 602(o)) and violation of probation (PC 1203.2(a)(2)).
