Marguerite Claire (Newman) Martin
May 6, 1926 – Nov. 6, 2020

Our mom, grandma and great-grandma was born in Portland, Oregon on May 6, 1926. She was the oldest of three, followed by sister Laurel (Giacomini) then brother Jim. They then lived in Crescent City for a number of years before briefly moving to Los Angeles. The family then moved to Pepperwood to live with Marguerite’s grandparents, parents to her mother Claire. She attended Fortuna High, graduating in June 1944.

While she was attending high school, she stayed with cousins in Fortuna. She attended dances in the area (as that was their social life!) One day Marguerite’s friend Evelyn Martin (Chism), told her that she just had to meet her cousin and introduced Marguerite to her future husband, Tony Martin, and the rest was history.

They married November 28, 1944. This union led to so many years of great times and friends. Life was great. The following year came their first blessing, their son Frederick Antone. They then lived on their ranch on Kelly Lane off Coffee Creek Road in Ferndale.

The years on the dairy were very happy for them. Family was always around, and they all loved a good birthday party, anniversary party, wedding … and the card parties! Any occasion was always a great get-together of family and friends. They operated a dairy for many years before selling the dairy and moving into town. She bought and operated the Ferndale Dress Shop for several years.

Eventually Tony and Marguerite moved to Fortuna. Grandma spent many years working at Linda’s Hallmark, where she would retire from. She looked forward to seeing so many people throughout her day. I think she knew practically everyone who came into that store!

In 1970 she was blessed with the daughter she never had when Fred married Judy Kay O’Connell. The blessings continued with the birth of three granddaughters — Heather, Jessica and Nicole – then, much later, two great-granddaughters, when Kendra and Lexi were born to Nikki and husband Mark Miranda.

Family trips always involved Grandma and Grampa and none of us would have had it any other way. They were involved in every holiday, birthday, special event or game as it meant being able to spend time with their now grown granddaughters and great-granddaughters!

In 1984 when Tony retired, he and Marguerite then traveled for many years after all over the United States with the Good Sam RV group they belonged to. So many wonderful and lifelong friends and memories were made throughout her 94 years.

Marguerite was proceeded in death by her parents Claire and Grant Newman, stepfather Bill Frasier, sister Laurel, brother Jim and her love of 72 years, husband Tony, in March 2017.

Marguerite is survived by their son and daughter-in-law Fred and Judy; her granddaughters Heather (James), Jessica (Kris), Nikki (Mark) and their girls Kendra and Lexi Miranda; brother-in-law Hap Giacomini and sister-in-law Helen Newman; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins all who were so special to her. Also, bonus son Ray (Cathy) Schulz and special friends Linda and Barry Wiggington.

We are so thankful and blessed to have been able to celebrate everyday life with Marguerite. We find comfort in knowing that she is at peace and together again with her love Tony, dancing away in the stars!

Per Marguerite’s request, there will be no services at this time. We hope to have a remembrance in the spring of 2021.

With all of our love, Fred & Judy, Heather & James, Jessica & Kris, Nikki - Mark - Kendra & Lexi.
