California Highway Patrol release:

On 10-14-2020, at approximately 4:10 AM, the Humboldt Area CHP responded to a report of a big rig rollover on southbound US-101 south of Field’s Landing. Upon CHP arrival, it was determined that 33 year old Joseph Vecchetti was driving a 2020 Kenworth Semi southbound on US-101, south of Field’s Landing, hauling a load of lumber on his trailer. For unknown reasons, Mr. Vecchetti allowed the truck and trailer to travel off the west roadway edge and collide with the guardrail. The impact caused the truck and trailer to overturn and spill the load of lumber onto the side of the road. Mr. Vecchetti suffered major injuries as a result of this collision and was subsequently transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka for treatment of his injuries.

Due to the location of the collision, and the extensive amount of manpower and equipment needed to manage and clean up the scene, Cal-Trans assisted with a closure of the southbound #2 lane in the area. Cal-Trans personnel also assisted Buddy’s Towing with the clean up and recovery efforts of the lumber and vehicle. The California Highway Patrol would also like to thank the Eureka Police Department and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office for assisting with traffic control at the scene.

The CHP Humboldt Area Office is continuing to investigate this collision and asks anyone who may have information to contact the Humboldt Area CHP Office at 707-822-5981 or send an email to humboldt_area.humboldt_area@chp.ca.gov.
