Firefighters battling the Oak Fire north of Willits recently rescued a house cat with burned paws and a coat full of fire retardant, Calfire stated yesterday.
Firefighters affectionately nicknamed the cat “Phossie” for the Phos-Chek brand of red fire retardant that she was coated in.
“Phossie suffered burns on her paws and was a bit thirsty,” Calfire stated. “She was treated at the Mendocino County Animal Shelter.”
The cat was microchipped and firefighters were able to reunite the cat with its owner.
The Oak Fire has burned 1,100 acres and is 100 percent contained.
