From the California Highway Patrol:
On 02-27-21, at approximately 9:37 PM, the Humboldt Area CHP received a report of a two vehicle traffic collision on SR-36, near mile post marker 15.50.
A preliminary investigation by CHP determined that a 2006 Dodge 3500, driven by 31 year old Andrew M. Harmon, of Rio Dell, CA, was traveling eastbound on SR-36. A 2006 BMW 750 LI was traveling westbound on SR-36, approaching the Dodge 3500. The Dodge 3500 was driven over the double yellow line separating the lanes, and the vehicles collided head-on. The driver of the BMW sustained major injuries, was transported to St. Joseph Hospital, and hours later succumbed to his injuries. The passenger also sustain major injuries and was transported to St. Joseph Hospital.
Andrew M. Harmon left the scene of the collision prior to CHP arrival and was located in the City of Rio Dell. Impairment is being investigated as a contributing factor in this collision. Andrew M. Harmon was placed under arrest for Felony DUI, felony hit and run, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He was transported to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment of minor injuries prior to being transferred to the custody of the Humboldt County Jail.
