Marty Modine, age 56 of Eureka, passed away on January 6, 2022, after a heroic battle with cancer. He was born in Garberville and spent most of his life in Humboldt County. He graduated from Eureka High School in 1983 and then joined the Marine Corps as an engineer that built bridges. After leaving the Marines, he worked for Brinks in the San Jose area. He moved back to Humboldt County and worked for Bank of America, Blue Lake Casino and other local companies in security.

He loved fishing and was an avid collector of Star Wars, Kiss and Viking memorabilia. He was involved in the 501st Star Wars Legion and enjoyed participating in their activities and charity functions.

He loved his cats and his last cat, Freya, had been with him for nine years.

He is preceded in death by his mother Jody and is survived by his father LeRoy, stepmother Ina and many family members and friends. He will be greatly missed by all.

As a proud Marine Corps Veteran, he will be buried in the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo, California. There will be a private celebration of life at another time when it is safer for family and friends to gather.

“God saw him getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around him and whispered, ‘Come to me.’ With tearful eyes we watched him suffer and saw him slowly fade away. Although we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands put to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.”

We know we will see him in his mansion in Heaven when we join him.
