Just after 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1 a magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred approximately 30 miles south of Eureka. 

There is no tsunami risk as a result of the earthquake. Community members are advised to be prepared to drop, cover, and hold on in the event of aftershocks. For earthquake safety tips, visit: ready.gov/earthquakes.

As a precaution CalTrans has closed State Route 211 at Fernbridge Road to conduct safety inspections. There is no estimated time when the roadway will be reopened. For the latest CalTrans road conditions updates go to quickmap.dot.ca.gov or the CalTrans Quickmap app.

 The Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services will provide updates as more information becomes available.
