Caryl Ann Roberts passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the age of 81, on October 3, 2023, in Loleta, where she lived for the last two years with her husband, oldest son and daughter-in-law.

Caryl was born in Richmond, Indiana on May 4, 1942, to Robert Wesley Colvin and Elsie Schippits. While Robert was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps the family moved between Illinois, Virginia, and North Carolina, until, in the early 1950s, Robert was stationed at Camp Pendleton and the family settled in Vista, California.

Caryl attended Lincoln Junior High School and Vista High School, where she met her future husband, graduating with the class of 1960. She earned her Associate of Arts degree from Palomar College and worked various secretarial jobs for several years after graduating.

In December 1966, Caryl became engaged to her high school sweetheart, Edgar W. Roberts Jr. They were married March 25, 1967, in Poway, California. Caryl and Edgar rented an apartment in Rancho Peñasquitos, until they bought their first and only home there in 1971, in which they lived happily for 51 years.

Caryl and Edgar Jr raised two sons, Edgar III and Christian. Caryl volunteered in the boys’ classrooms and was an adult leader during her sons’ time in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. After her children left home, Caryl went back to work in the retail sector and continued to volunteer at local schools.

Caryl enjoyed camping and traveling with her husband, spending as much time in their RV as they could, savoring their retirement. She also loved sewing, especially with her sister Diana and her mother-in-law Lois Roberts. Her handmade gifts were always eagerly anticipated and appreciated at birthdays and Christmas. Caryl was a lifelong fan of the San Diego Padres.

In February of 2021 she and her husband relocated to Loleta to live with their son Edgar III and daughter-in-law Laysha to receive the help and support they needed in their golden years. Caryl had a special relationship with Laysha, whom she considered the daughter she never had.

Caryl was an incredibly strong woman, surviving breast cancer three times, a broken neck, femur and pelvis, and lived with lupus for many decades. Her strength and determination in overcoming these injuries and illnesses was an inspiration to many.

Caryl and Edgar Jr had 56 very happy and loving years of marriage together.

Caryl was preceded in death by her father and mother, and her youngest son Christian. She is survived by her husband, Edgar W. Roberts, Jr, her younger sister Diana Henretty and her husband Gary; oldest son Edgar W. Roberts, III and daughter-in-law Laysha of Loleta, California; four grandchildren – Edgar W. Roberts, IV and his wife Gilly of Fortuna, California, Daniel Roberts of San Diego, California, Callie Roberts of San Diego, California and Molly Roberts of Fresno, California; one great-grandson – Edgar V (Quinn) of Fortuna, California; her nephew Joe Henretty and wife Bethany of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and niece Jenny Omondi and husband Kevin of Oklahoma.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Humboldt, and acknowledge the outstanding professional, loving care they gave Caryl during the last few months of her life, especially her home health aide, Itzel.

Caryl will be laid to rest in the National Cemetery at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego, California on Friday October 27. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Caryl’s name to Hospice of Humboldt.

Caryl was a loving, supportive, and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and will be deeply missed by those who love her.
