Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:
On Monday April 7th, 2025 @ 0650 hours, Humboldt Bay Fire was dispatched to a reported structure fire @ 2141 Tydd St in Eureka (The Silvercrest Residence). HBF was advised the fire alarm was sounding on the 5th floor with smoke in the hallway. Humboldt Bay Fire responded with three Engines, one Ladder Truck and a Battalion Chief.
The first engine arrived from Fire Station #4 and reported there was no smoke visible from the exterior of the building. Firefighters entered the building and accessed the 5th floor via the staircase and reported smoke in the 5th floor hallway. Firefighters located the fire in an apartment and found heavy smoke conditions inside the apartment. Firefighters connected a hose line to the standpipe system and entered the apartment and extinguished the fire. Additional HBF units arrived on scene and searched the apartment and found one victim inside the apartment unconscious. The victim was removed by Firefighters to the ground floor and was treated by HBF Paramedics. The victim was transferred to City Ambulance and transported to SJH in critical condition.
Several occupants of apartments on the 5th floor were evacuated and other occupants were ordered to shelter in place. HBF crews remained on scene for an additional 2 hours to ventilate the building of smoke and investigate the cause and origin of the fire. The exact cause of the is undetermined but believed to be accidental in nature.
There were no other civilian or Firefighter injures and damage is estimated at $40,000.
This apartment building is protected by several systems that work to ensure the safety of the occupants and are inspected every year by Humboldt Bay Fire personnel. While the fire did not generate enough heat to activate the fire sprinkler system, the other protection systems such as the fire alarm system and stand pipe system (allowing firefighters to extend hose lines on the 5th floor) operated as designed. This facilitated early notification of building staff and of the fire department and rapid extinguishment. Humboldt Bay Fire would like to remind building owners to maintain their installed fire and life safety systems to ensure the safety of their occupants and properties.
