Steven G. Martin passed away on June 5, 2025, after several months of battling cancer. “Big Steve,” as he was known to many people, was valiant up to the end, maintaining he was going to get better. He had many plans which sadly didn’t come to fruition in the time he was granted on earth.
Steve was born on December 2, 1963 in Sacramento. He was born just 13 months after his only sibling, Tony. With a childhood free of modern constraints, he spent hours on his bike near the American River and on many fishing adventures with his extended family. His early years were filled with cherished memories of cousins, laughter, and the kind of freedom that shaped his resilient spirit.
Steve’s path took him down a period of struggle followed by his ultimate decision to go into truck driving in the 1990s, which led to the success he found in his future. Steve was a trucker through and through. He made many friendships through his days with Joe Costa Trucking. He went on to own his own truck hauling lumber and feed often with the help of his stepson Corey.
After the recession, he went back to working for a few different trucking companies before starting the current iteration of Big Steve’s Trucking, which focused on auto transport. Starting in 2014, he began moving vehicles in and out of Humboldt County from the Bay Area and Sacramento. Like a daily puzzle, he could maintain a mental list of cars at auction and begin arranging them in his head for stacking and loading on his rig. Steve was proud to serve numerous local dealerships and made loyal friendships within them.
In 2018, he began training his wife, Amy, to work alongside him, sharing his knowledge and passion while fostering a business partnership that allowed them to spend more time together. Steve was immensely proud of Amy and openly encouraged her, and other women, to pursue success in male-dominated trades.
One of Steve’s great loves was his pets, specifically blue heelers also known as Australian Cattle Dogs. On the other side he has joined Trio, Teetwo, Sheila and Convoy. A trip to the beach in Samoa with the dogs in his Jeep was a favorite pastime. He leaves behind his first red heeler, Rusty “The Galoot,” and Girlie the Chiweenie.
Steve enjoyed his Harley-Davidson days and also loved spending time on his boat ‘The Bologna Sandwich’ where crabbing and fishing for halibut, rockfish or salmon garnered him great bounties which he loved sharing with friends.
Among Steve’s greatest joys was the profound bond he shared with his stepson, Corey. Their relationship, built on love and mutual respect, was a source of strength and pride for Steve.
In 2009, Steve met the love of his life, Amy. Together, they shared 16 wonderful years, marrying in 2015. Whether working side by side or enjoying occasional travels, their love and partnership brought them immense happiness. His commitment to her and her many endeavors was remarkable.
His father Charles “Roger” Martin, mother Patricia Hansen (nee Hicks), and brother Tony Martin, all preceded him in death. Steve leaves behind his beloved Aunt Charlotte Rose, a plenitude of cousins, many extended family members, neighbors who surrounded him with love, friends Ballew, Tim, Mike and Chris and years upon years of Dutch Bros broista acquaintances. His 64 oz. mug has been retired.
Steve loved a good joke or to rib a friend. His humor and generosity will never be forgotten. “Glad you got to see me” - his infamous words of goodbye when parting with friends will forever ring in ears.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday August 24, 2025, at the Wharfinger Building in Eureka from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. All are welcome to drop by and remember the big guy.
