Cal Poly Humboldt Interim President Michael E. Spagna sent the following message to the campus community this morning following the announcement that Richard A. Carvajal has been hired to fill the permanent position, starting in January:
Hello Lumberjacks,
This is an important day for our entire community as Cal Poly Humboldt enters an exciting new chapter of leadership. Beginning January 20, 2026, Dr. Richard A. Carvajal will step into the role of president. I look forward to introducing Dr. Carvajal to the people and places that make Humboldt so distinct—our redwoods, our coast, and above all, our extraordinary students, faculty, staff, alumni, local community members, and those who care about the future of Humboldt.
Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the strength, heart, and resilience of this community—from the curiosity and creativity of our students to the commitment and care shown daily by our faculty and staff. As I prepare to pass the baton, I want to offer my deepest thanks to each of you. Your support, your trust, and your belief in what we’re building here have meant the world to me.
Like the grounded and resilient redwoods that surround us, our community continues to grow stronger together. With Dr. Carvajal’s leadership and partnership, Humboldt will continue to thrive and reach new heights.
Please join me in warmly welcoming Dr. Carvajal to Cal Poly Humboldt. I know our community will extend the same generosity and support you have so kindly shared with me. I am looking forward to sharing everything I’ve learned with Dr. Carvajal when he visits Humboldt, and I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition by sharing the knowledge and relationships that were invaluable in my own acclimation to this warm and welcoming campus.
With gratitude,
Michael E. Spagna, Ph.D.
Interim President
