Matthew Edwin Winburn passed away unexpectedly and too soon in a mountain biking accident on August 10, 2025 at the age of 49. Born in Eureka to Lon and Beverly Winburn (Cook), the family moved to Fortuna, where Matt attended Fortuna South School, Grace Chapel/New Life Christian, Fortuna Middle and Fortuna High.
After graduating high school, Matt attended Shasta Junior College, earning a degree in Fire Science while working seasonally for Cal Fire. Matt later attended College of the Redwoods, receiving a degree in nursing and beginning a career which took him to the Sacramento/Stockton area.
Although short-lived, Matt fulfilled his dream of moving to Hawaii in 2016 where he enjoyed the island life, motorcycling the roads and obtaining his open water diving certification. He returned to the Sacramento area in the fall of 2016, where he resided until the spring of 2023, then relocating to Kemmerer, Wyoming.
We were comforted knowing that he was in a place in his life that brought him happiness and joy. He found a wonderful community and made many great friends. He loved the outdoors and never wasted the opportunity to breathe in the beauty! He leaves a hole in our hearts - but we know he is with those who he lost too soon.
Matt was preceded in death by his mother Beverly Winburn (Cook), grandparents Kay and Earl Kilduff, grandfather Ed (Pops) Winburn, and great-grandmother Florene Russell. Matt is survived by his father, Lon Winburn (Julie), brothers-in-law Justin Pedrotti and Dustin Pedrotti, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on September 27 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department, 320 So. Fortuna Blvd. in Fortuna. He will be interred at Sunrise Cemetery.
