That huge column of smoke drifting out over downtown Eureka this morning came from a boat on fire in the Eureka Marina.
Humboldt Bay Fire was called to the scene at around 9 a.m. and extinguished the fire around 15 minutes later. No one was on the boat, and no one on the dock was injured. Nearby boats weren’t damaged either. The fire department doesn’t yet know why the fire started.
The fire emitted the heavy black smoke because the boat was made out of fiberglass, battalion chief John Chambers explained to the Outpost at the scene.
