Rich Leonardo nació el 3 de mayo de 1956, hijo de Tony y Gerry Leonardo de Ferndale. Si Rich hubiera sido el primogénito, puede que no hubieran tenido otro.

Rich falleció el 30 de abril de 2026, tan solo tres días antes de su 70 cumpleaños.

Para su familia, él era un hijo, un hermano pequeño, tío, bisabuelo, primo y un dolor en el trasero. Lo amamos y lo extrañaremos mucho. Para otros, era descrito como salvaje, amoroso, ruidoso, dulce, terco, cariñoso, emocional, terco, de oro, oso de peluche, y algunos otros nombres más. Era un sólido cómplice para sus amigos (algunos solo podremos mencionar). Rich siempre estaba dispuesto a echar una mano, sin embargo, a veces accidentalmente comenzaba una guerra. Rich tenía un apodo proporcionado por sus amigos más cercanos cuando era joven, “Bananas”. Le quedaba bien.

Lo amábamos, y él amaba apasionadamente a sus amigos y comunidad.

Rich creció asistiendo a la escuela primaria en Grizzly Bluff en Ferndale. Él y sus hermanos eran niños de rancho normales que siempre estaban metidos en un poco de travesuras. Como Rich era el más joven, fue seleccionado a regañadientes como piloto de pruebas para muchas de sus aventuras juveniles. Después de la histórica inundación de 1964, un capítulo importante en el Álbum Familiar Leonardo, esto obligó a los niños Leonardo a asistir a la escuela en la ciudad (Ferndale). Rich se graduó de la Preparatoria Ferndale en 1974 como presidente de clase. ¿Quién lo hubiera sabido?

Después de graduarse, Rich ingresó al negocio lácteo como socio de su padre en la Lechería Leonardo & Hijo. “Rancho lechero” era el título, aunque las vacas no eran realmente la prioridad. Rich pasaba la mayor parte de su tiempo talando y extrayendo grava del río. Ese tractor John Deere fue puesto a prueba arrastrando y cargando troncos, extrayendo grava, y algunas otras tareas mejor no mencionadas aquí en el periódico.

“Bananas” proporcionaba a todos buen material de estos días. Podemos comenzar con el juego de fútbol de St. Helena, hablar sobre su Toyota con plataforma plana, o cuando … bueno, podemos contar estas historias más tarde en buena compañía.

Durante los años de rancho, Rich se involucró mucho en el servicio comunitario, “esperen”, esto es serio. Rich se unió al Departamento de Bomberos de Ferndale. El primer rol de Rich en el departamento comenzó como Teniente de la Compañía 1, avanzando rápidamente a Capitán, luego a Jefe Asistente antes de asumir finalmente el rol de “Jefe Leonardo”.

El liderazgo del Jefe Leonardo se extendió más allá del Departamento de Bomberos de Ferndale. Se desempeñó como Presidente de la Asociación de Jefes de Bomberos del Condado de Humboldt durante dos años, fomentando la colaboración y comunicación entre los departamentos de bomberos de toda la región. Amaba su rol.

El compromiso y experiencia de Rich en seguridad pública fueron aún más reconocidos cuando fue nombrado para el prestigioso comité “Gang of 5” en el que se desempeñó durante 5 años. Formado después de los trágicos eventos del 9/11, este comité estaba compuesto por el alguacil, dos jefes de bomberos, el jefe de salud pública y un jefe de policía. El comité tenía la tarea de distribuir subvenciones que mejoraban la infraestructura y preparación para la seguridad pública. Sus años de servicio y ascenso a través de las filas hablan mucho sobre su compromiso con el Condado de Humboldt y el Valle de Eel River. Rich hizo un excelente trabajo y tomó estos roles más en serio que cualquier otra cosa en su vida.

Rich siempre quiso ayudar a alegrarle el día a alguien. En algún momento de la década de los 2000, Ginger, la hermana mayor de Rich, quería ver el Árbol de Navidad de Ferndale iluminado por última vez en Nochevieja. Ferndale había estado sin electricidad durante unos días, por lo que el árbol no estaba iluminado. Rich coordinó conseguir un generador para enchufar el árbol y llamó con orgullo a su hermana para que saliera a ver. ¡Seguro que le puso una gran sonrisa en la cara! Lograron encender tres series de luces y, por supuesto, la estrella en la cima brillaba intensamente. Rich hizo feliz a su hermana … ese día.

During the next chapter in Richie’s life, he went to work for his brother Tony at Leonardo Logging. Rich loved working in the timber industry. Rich, otherwise known as R6 on the company radio, helped take care of safety, dispatching trucks, pilot car, running errands and most of all, public relations. It suited Rich well! With a new pick up and a fuel card, he was set. Tony was thankful for all those times he had Rich for the extra help … but could never find Rich? Rich looked up to his brother, and Tony loved his little brother, and that is why Tony never killed him.

As we all know, Rich had a very strong work ethic. He worked regular shifts at the Palace in Ferndale and The Playroom in Fortuna, rarely missing a shift. He operated his own pilot car service in between shifts, and even had a short stint contributing to the press at the Ferndale Enterprise.

Rich was a social butterfly, and it is now confirmed, Rich did know everyone! The outpouring of calls, texts, and conversations we have received is amazing. People from all walks of life! We are laughing and scratching our heads wondering about a few. One thing we can say for sure is that Rich had a larger and more diverse group of friends than most people can comprehend. This is a true reflection of who he was. Thank you to all those who stopped by to say hello to Rich over the past two months.

We know Rich would want to mention his best friend, Dave Mogni. Rich had a difficult time with the recent passing of Dave. Some of the best times of Richie’s life were spent with Dave, and the most memorable was the sailing trip he took with Dave and Barb around the Virgin Islands. This is not to say Dave was his only best friend. To the Pretzel “Guy”, he loved and listened to you more than he would his own family. He was SO proud of all the fun times you shared. Thank you for all you have done for him over the years.

To all Richie’s other best friends, you know he loved you guys. Bobby Shinn for all the adventures since childhood, Luke McCanless and the gang for all the food, beverages and crabbing adventures, Kevin Frye, and too many others to mention. You all know who you are! Thank you for being a part of his family.

To all the staff at Fortuna Rehab, we know Rich would want to give a big shout out to all the ladies! You took such great care of him, and we thank you very much for your sincere love and care. Our appreciation to Pat Cowan for her loving comfort and knowledge to Rich and our family.

Richard is survived by his brother Tony and wife Janice Leonardo, his sister Ginger Nunes, his nephews Shannon and wife Amy Leonardo, Brian and wife Nikki Leonardo, Trevor and girlfriend Brenna Kirkpatrick, Lucas and wife Cassie Leonardo, nieces Sierra and husband Phil Mullens, Michelle Nunes and son Faris, great nephew Shaun Leonardo and fiancé Kaylee, great nieces Ava Leonardo and Jessica Leonardo. And soon to be great-great niece, Peyton Leonardo.

Rich was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Gerry Leonardo, sister Tina Leonardo, and brother-in-law John Nunes.

A celebration of life for Rich, Uncle Richie, Bananas, will be held at the Portuguese Hall in Ferndale on Saturday, May 30, 2026. Show up around 11 a.m. for a drink. We will have some stories and lunch then most likely have a parade across the alley to finish off the day at Richie’s office.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Ayres Family Cremation.
