Press release from the City of Eureka:
The City of Eureka invites everyone who lives, works, or owns a business in Eureka to attend a free Earthquake & Tsunami Preparedness Workshop.
Previous tsunami warnings uncovered that Eureka wasn’t as prepared as we need to be. We have a chance to change that, but we need to prepare. Our emergency responders work hard to keep our community safe, but in a major disaster, they will not be able to help everyone right away. That’s why we all need to have a plan to keep ourselves, our families, our businesses, and our community safe.
At this workshop, local emergency preparedness experts will share important information and simple steps you can take now to be ready.
Topics include:
- Why Preparedness Matters: What to expect following a major earthquake, when to take immediate action, and why you shouldn’t wait for an official tsunami warning.
- Know Your Zone: Find out if your home, workplace, or business is in the tsunami zone, where to go if you need to evacuate, and what to do if you’re outside the zone.
- Make Your Plan: Learn how to create an emergency plan, identify evacuation routes, prepare a go bag, and how to be prepared before help arrives.
- If You Have Children in School: Learn which schools are in the tsunami zone, understand school emergency procedures, what parents should do after a major earthquake, and how to plan for family reunification.
- Preparedness in Practice: Learn from examples of local businesses and organizations taking steps to prepare, and how you can do the same.
Attendees have access to resource tables, speak directly with local experts, ask questions, and take away information to help develop their own emergency plans.
