Press release from the Eureka Police Department:
The Eureka Police Department (EPD) is reminding the community that enforcement of applicable state laws governing electric bicycles, electric motorcycles, and electric scooters will continue as part of the department’s ongoing efforts to improve roadway safety.
In August, EPD began educating the community about the laws and safety responsibilities associated with these vehicles. Throughout September, officers continued those efforts by combining education with enforcement, stopping riders when violations were observed and explaining the associated safety risks.
Moving forward, the department’s focus will remain on promoting compliance and improving roadway safety through enforcement of applicable state laws. When officers observe violations, appropriate enforcement action may be taken, including citations and vehicle impoundment, depending on the circumstances. When a juvenile is involved, parents or guardians may be contacted, advised of the violation, and provided with an Electric Bicycle/Electric Motorcycle Safety Advisement.
This effort is not about issuing more citations. It is about preventing serious injuries and tragedies, promoting responsible riding, and keeping the community safe. EPD will continue addressing burglaries, drug activity, property crime, violent crime, and other public safety concerns while recognizing that traffic safety is also an important part of protecting the community. Parents and guardians are encouraged to take an active role in understanding the type of vehicle their child is operating and the laws that apply. Not all electric bicycles, electric motorcycles, and electric scooters are subject to the same requirements. Depending on the circumstances, allowing a juvenile to operate a vehicle unlawfully may also have legal consequences for a parent or guardian.
The Eureka Police Department encourages all riders and families to learn the applicable laws, make responsible decisions, and prioritize safety when using public roadways. By working together, we can help prevent tragedies and make our roadways safer for everyone. The Eureka Police Department is committed to protecting the community through professional policing, public education, and proactive enforcement.
