In Loving Memory of Shawn Rosdahl-Toczyl
October 31,
1981 – August 27, 2026
Shawn Rosdahl-Toczyl was born on October 31, 1981, to Deanna Rosdahl-Toczyl and James Toczyl. From the very beginning, Shawn showed the world that he was a fighter. Born two months premature, he fought his way into this world and survived, beginning a lifelong journey marked by incredible resilience, determination, and an unwavering will to live.
Shawn attended schools in the local communities of Scotia and Fortuna. In his early teens, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, beginning a long road of medical challenges that would test his strength time and time again. Over the past 15 years, he faced numerous health complications, surgeries, dialysis, and hospital stays. Yet, despite the difficult card’s life dealt him, Shawn continued to fight. He met each new diagnosis with determination and an attitude that inspired those around him.
Those who cared for Shawn, whether at dialysis or in the hospital, often commented on his positive outlook. He remained upbeat, appreciative and full of spirit even when life was at its hardest. Shawn was stubborn in the best sense of the word, fiercely determined, compassionate, and respectful of those who became part of his life. He had a way of touching people simply by being himself, and he was loved by so many who had the privilege of knowing him.
One of Shawn’s proudest and most cherished memories was being part of the theatrical production Marat/Sade in San Francisco in 2011. He played the role of “The Mad Animal,” a part he truly rocked, shining on stage and bringing his own unforgettable presence to the performance. During that year in San Francisco, he made many friends and shared precious quality time with his dads, James and Russell. Those experiences and memories would remain close to his heart.
It should come as no surprise that Halloween was Shawn’s favorite holiday, especially since it also happened to be his birthday. It was a day that perfectly suited his spirit and personality. Shawn also enjoyed gaming, where he formed friendships with many online companions, and spending time at the local casino. Whether through his hobbies, his friendships, or his adventures, Shawn found ways to enjoy life and connect with others.
After a lifetime of fighting through challenges that would have tested even the strongest among us, Shawn faced his final battle following his last surgery. His heart, liver, and other organs could no longer carry him forward on the many quests and adventures that awaited him. On August 27, 2026, at 7:47 p.m.—like a jet taking off into the sunset—Shawn peacefully passed away, surrounded by family and friends. We find comfort in believing that the good Lord was finally ready to welcome him home, where he could rest after a lifetime of fighting.
Though Shawn’s earthly journey has ended, his spirit, his courage, his humor, and the memories he created will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, compassion, and the reminder to keep fighting, keep appreciating the people around us, and keep finding joy even when life is difficult.
Shawn will be deeply missed by his family, friends, online gaming companions, and all those whose lives he touched. His journey was not an easy one, but he faced it with strength and positivity that will never be forgotten.
Until we meet again, Shawn. May your next adventure be filled with peace, freedom, and endless possibilities. You fought a long and courageous battle, and now you can finally rest.
