A man who was found brutally attacked in the Arcata Community Forest eight months ago has died from his injuries, according to his family.
Bill Spenceley, then 75, was found with serious head injuries on January 30. Police later arrested a suspect who faces attempted murder charges.
In an update on a GoFundMe page fundraising for Spenceley’s extensive medical care, Christine Peter wrote that he died Monday morning.
“Looking back, we now understand just how important it was to Bill to come home—to the place he loved and where he truly wanted to be. He was able to spend a week in his own home,” Peter wrote in the update.
“Knowing that Bill was surrounded by love, with the person he loved beside him, brings our family a great deal of comfort,” she wrote.
Spenceley, who was hiking in the forest the day of the attack, was the former director of the Humboldt Community Access and Resource Center.
According to updates from family members and court testimony, he required intensive medical care in the months following the attack.
The page said a memorial to honor Spenceley’s life will be held, with more information incoming.
“Today, please send a little extra love Bill’s way as he begins his next journey—free from pain, free from suffering, and whole again. ❤️ We love you, Bill. You will be deeply missed.”
The GoFundMe, which has raised $35,000, will continue to be used for medical costs and his final expenses.
Suspect Shawn Kolpak remains in custody, awaiting trial for attempted murder. He was held to answer to the charges against him following a preliminary hearing in March. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for October 16.
[Update, 3:52 p.m.] In an email to the Outpost, District Attorney Stacey Eads said there is ongoing investigation, and the office is awaiting additional information before deciding what, if any, additional charges should be filed.
The District Attorney’s Office did not immediately return an email inquiring if prosecutors will now pursue murder charges against Kolpak.
Kolpak faces additional charges for a separate attack on an employee of Eureka Natural Foods last year, where he allegedly attacked the man with an exercise weight. Kolpak has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
