Press release from the Humboldt County Administrative Office:

Humboldt County Public Library’s faithful Bookmobile is ready to celebrate its retirement, and everyone is invited to help send it off in style on Friday, Oct. 2.

For over 20 years, Humboldt County’s Bookmobile traveled to rural communities including Orleans, Bridgeville, Dinsmore, Petrolia, Honeydew, Mirada, Myers Flat, Weott, Redcrest, Big Lagoon and Orick to provide mobile library services. After decades of use, mechanics have determined that the Bookmobile is no longer able to make the journey.

Currently, Bookmobile services will continue to operate out of a smaller vehicle. Since storage capacity is limited, a smaller selection of books, audiobooks and materials will be available. Bookmobile patrons are encouraged to email BKMHUML@co.humboldt.ca.us or call 707-267-9933 to request books and materials in advance.

A new Bookmobile will be coming in summer 2027, thanks to generous funding provided by the Humboldt Library Foundation.

“We are so grateful for the Humboldt Library Foundation’s support, which has made it possible for the library to purchase our next Bookmobile,” said Humboldt County Library Interim Director Sean Hinman. “The Bookmobile program ensures library materials are available and accessible to residents in more remote areas of Humboldt County, enabling us to continue fostering lifelong learning for all members of our community.”

Bookmobile Retirement Celebration

The current Bookmobile’s legacy lives on in every reader it reached. The Humboldt County Public Library in Eureka, located at 1313 Third St., will be hosting a Bookmobile retirement celebration on Friday, Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Attendees will enjoy storytime at 10 a.m., a book giveaway and treats. All community members are invited to attend, share memories and celebrate the Bookmobile’s years of bringing books and library services to Humboldt County’s rural communities.
