Susan Ann Strope passed away at home, surrounded by her family on September 20, 2026, just shy of her 80th birthday, after a valiant six-year battle with cancer. 

She leaves behind her husband of 58 years, Lane Strope and two sons, Ian and Seth, and her loving daughter-in-law Olivia Strope; her two sisters Patricia Keenan (Marv) and Beth Costa (Greg); her sisters-in-law Lynn Intersimone (John) and Carla Strope (Reed); along with numerous nieces, nephews and even grand-nieces and nephews.

Born in San Francisco, Susan moved with her family to Eureka in 1964.

After marrying Lane, Susan devoted most of her time to building a home, and working at Times Printing Company in Eureka with her husband and son Seth. She also volunteered countless hours at Fieldbrook Elementary School.

When she reached retirement age, she picked up her paint brushes and rekindled her love of painting. Susan was an active member of The Representational Art League for many years. In 2012 she opened her own “Studio S” in Old Town Eureka, to showcase not only her work, but many other local artists. She participated in Arts Alive! and actively showed her work at local venues. Her paintings are signed with her maiden name of Jaehne, an ode to her grandfather who inspired her to paint at an early age.

In Susan’s own words, “I want my paintings to give the viewer a feeling of looking at an exaggerated memory of something. I try to achieve that sensation by painting in a stylized manner and using interesting colors.  I like the light to look magical, not necessarily true.” 

“Aunt Suzy” will forever be remembered by her many nieces and nephews for the funny cards that make silly noises, which she sent for every occasion!  

Per Susan’s wishes there will be no formal services. In lieu of flowers, for those interested, donations in Susan’s name could be made to Hospice of Humboldt — 3327 Timber Fall Ct, Eureka, CA, 95503.
