James Eric “Eric” Brundage, a longtime resident of Arcata and patriarch of a large blended family, passed away at his home on September 1st, 2026, surrounded by his beloved wife, Maureen Whelan Brundage and family.

Eric was born on May 5, 1944, and came to Humboldt County as a young child with his parents, William “Bill” Brundage and Katherine “Kay” Brundage where his brother Tom was born in 1947. That year, they moved to Fickle Hill above Arcata, homesteading a 40-acre parcel alongside Eric’s grandfather, Robert Brundage. In 1985, Eric and Maureen were married and later built their own home on part of that land, with a spectacular view of Humboldt Bay and the towering redwood forests.

Eric’s love for Jesus was deeply personal and he shared his faith with anyone who would listen. He had a genuine desire for others to experience the same peace, love and assurance that he had found.

He owned and operated Brundage Construction & Properties. Eric had a gift for building with his hands, family homes and more. He enjoyed teaching others to build alongside him. He served in the Army National Guard. 

He loved the outdoors –  hunting and skiing were lifelong passions. Some of his happiest moments were family parties filled with popcorn, card games and laughter. He enjoyed baking apple pies from the apples he grew on his land.

Eric is survived by his wife, Maureen; children Kim McAlister & husband Jim, Jill Short & husband Myrin, Michael Meagher & wife Rachel, John Meagher & fiancé Katie Simas, James Meagher & wife Annie, Phil Meagher & wife Nicole, Katherine Brundage O’Faolain, Angela Grytness & husband Dane and 22 grandchildren.

The Brundage family is deeply grateful for the love and care shown to Eric throughout his life. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Humboldt for their compassionate care and support.

A celebration of life will be held September 11, 2026, at Azalea Hall, 1620 Pickett Road, Mckinleyville. Service will be held at 5 p.m. followed by a reception.
