Michael Jesse Lyons, born November 28, 1938, in Eureka, passed away on September 1, 2026 in the community he called home throughout his life.

Michael’s early years were marked by hardship. At five years old, he and his siblings were abandoned by their mother and placed in foster care. He often went without, but even as a young boy, Michael showed the perseverance and resilience that would define his life. At 11 years old he worked a paper route and washed taxicabs, and at 15, he went to work on a ranch in Elk River in search of steady work and good food.

After graduating from high school, Michael joined the United States Army and served in Alaska. He later married his high school sweetheart, Kristin Stevens, and together they had four daughters.

Above all else, Michael was a consistently good and devoted father. His care extended well beyond his own family. He always looked out for his daughters’ friends, nieces, nephews, and any child who needed support. In Mike’s world, no child was ever to be left behind.

Mike worked as a longshoreman for 42 years during the heyday of Eureka’s harbor and logging industries. During his career, he served as a foreman for Westfall Stevedore Company, where he was respected and appreciated for his fairness, professionalism, and consistency. He was a hardworking, independent man who could always be counted on to help others, yet didn’t ask anyone for help himself.

After losing his beloved wife when he was 62, he once again showed his remarkable resilience. He kept his chin up and continued moving forward.

 In retirement, he enjoyed playing cards with his buddies, spending time with his daughters, and traveling for leisure. In 2011, he met his caring companion, Carol McCormick, who remained by his side till the end. 

Mike was always ready to go somewhere, as long as there was a road ahead, a steering wheel in his hand, and something new to see.

He will be remembered for his resilience, generosity, quiet strength, and kind soul. Despite the difficulties he faced early in life, he chose to become someone others could depend upon. His greatest legacy is the love and benevolence he gave his family.

In the end, it was Mike’s big heart that failed him. Thankfully, Hospice of Humboldt was there to make everything as peaceful and comfortable as possible. Because of their compassionate care, Michael did not suffer, and he was able to pass gently and peacefully, surrounded by love.

He will be deeply missed by his four daughters and their husbands; Dave and Regina Millot, John and Tracy Forrest, Kevin and Kellie Kaldveer, and Allen and Michaela Williams; his companion, Carol McCormick and his grandchildren; Michael and Kyle Millot, Ryan and Pace Comer, and Jordan Williams. 

He will be lovingly remembered by his extended family and all those fortunate enough to have known him.

A celebration of Michael’s life will be held on October 3 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, located at 517 G Street in Eureka. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and honor Michael’s life and legacy.
