Arcata City Council Looks Inward this Week
File photo.
The Arcata City Council will take a nice, long, introspective look at their goals and how they’d like to spend city funds for the upcoming fiscal year during two study sessions scheduled for today and Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
The two agendas are stuffed with items on spending and on the philosophical engine powering Arcata’s future legislation.
Today’s meeting will touch on the state of the upcoming fiscal year’s budget and a potential renewal of the Measure G 0.75% sales tax. On Wednesday, the council will review their special revenue funds and Capital Improvement Projects (CIP).
The sales tax increase has been a boon for the city’s coffers, and the council will likely try and renew it again during the upcoming 2026 voting cycle. The CIPs, important infrastructure projects, are numerous and impactful; Arcata’s list of CIPs runs to five pages and includes everything from the steel waterline replacement project to the upcoming Sunset Avenue Interchange project to more pedestrian projects like sidewalk repair and trail building.
Arcata’s legislative goals warrant seven pages of guidelines outlining what positions Arcata will take on a wide variety of local, state, and federal policy issues; the city council members will go over what they think might be worth changing today and debate it again on Wednesday.
