… or, as a World War I infantryman's letter home to his sweetheart!
My Dearest Jane,
I write to you from the trenches, under heavy fire from German artillery. The chaos and noise around me are overwhelming, but my thoughts are only of you. Your love and support give me the strength to endure these difficult times.
The Planning Commission meeting is coming up on April 28, 2026, where they will review the design review permit for interior and exterior modifications at 725 and 735 8th Street. The buildings are undergoing rehabilitation and renovation work, and I can’t help but think about how we could be planning our own future together instead of this war.
The work includes structural repairs, electrical upgrades, interior renovations, and ADA accessibility improvements. The Old Post Office at 735 8th Street, a Local Historic Landmark, will receive some facade work to preserve its historic integrity. The neighboring building at 725 8th Street is not individually designated as a Historic Landmark but will also undergo improvements to match its twin appearance.
I find solace in the idea that these buildings, with their rich history and character, are being preserved for future generations to appreciate. It gives me hope that one day, when this war is over, we can build our own future together, just like these buildings are being restored.
I long for the day when I can hold you in my arms again, away from the horrors of war. Until then, know that you are always in my thoughts and in my heart.
Yours always,
Charles
