a. Consider Potential Revenue Sources to Fund City Council Priorities

The city council is looking for ways to increase revenue to pay for public safety workers and other city employees. They are considering options like increasing taxes or implementing new taxes to generate more money. The upcoming general election on November 5, 2024, provides an opportunity for the council to put tax measures on the ballot. Some potential revenue generation options include increasing transaction and use tax, transient occupancy tax, or implementing a parcel tax. The council will need to make a decision on this before May 13, 2024, to meet the filing deadline for the election.

… or, as a megachurch sermon!

Dear members of our congregation,

Today, I come before you to share an important message regarding the needs of our community and the role we can play in meeting those needs. As a pastor, it is my duty to not only tend to the spiritual well-being of our congregation, but also to address the practical needs of our community.

The City Council is currently discussing potential revenue sources to fund important priorities in our city, including competitive pay for public safety workers and other essential city workers. As we know, it is crucial to ensure that those who protect and serve our community are fairly compensated for their hard work and dedication.

However, the reality is that in order to meet these needs, the city requires increased revenue. One of the proposed solutions is to consider a ballot measure for the upcoming general election on November 5, 2024. This measure would allow the city to generate additional funds to support our public safety workers and other essential services.

As members of this community, it is our responsibility to support and uplift those who serve and protect us. By coming together and supporting a potential revenue measure, we can make a tangible impact on the lives of those who work tirelessly to keep our city safe and thriving.

I urge you to consider the importance of this decision and to pray for guidance as we navigate these important discussions. Let us come together in unity and support our city in meeting the needs of our residents and ensuring a bright future for generations to come.

May we stand together in faith and action, knowing that our efforts can make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most. Thank you for your attention, and may God bless our community as we move forward in this important endeavor.

Amen.

a. Approval of Letter Opposing Measure A "The Humboldt Cannabis Reform Initiative"

The City Council in Fortuna opposes Measure A, a local voter initiative regarding cannabis reforms. The Council believes that the measure could have negative consequences for the cannabis industry in Humboldt County and could hinder its ability to adapt to changing regulations. They recommend authorizing and signing a letter of opposition to Measure A.

… or, as a Rodney Dangerfield joke!

“I tell ya, I saw this Measure A thing about cannabis reform, and it’s like trying to get a laugh out of a tough crowd. They think they’re doing something good, but in reality, they’re just making things harder for everybody. It’s like the cannabis industry is already in high school and Measure A is the strict principal coming in and ruining all the fun.”
