The County of Humboldt will hold a public meeting on 6/12/2023 to discuss and approve budgets for the upcoming fiscal year (FY) 2023-24 for special districts governed by the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors. The meeting will also discuss the proposed budget for the county, which has been prepared based on legal requirements. The budget has undergone a lengthy process that began in February, and the Board of Supervisors will receive staff reports and public testimony during the meeting before giving direction to staff regarding modifications and adopting the budget on June 27, 2023. The budget includes funding from all county funds and dependent special district funds and aims to manage resources to sustain services. The meeting will also explore alternative measures, such as mandatory furloughs, to reduce the budget deficit and prevent staffing reductions.

… or, as Star Trek fan fiction!

Captain Janeway sat at her desk in her ready room, reviewing the latest reports from her crew on the latest diplomatic mission they had completed. As she finished reading, her comm badge chirped, indicating an incoming message from the bridge.

“Captain, we’ve received a transmission from Humboldt County on Earth,” came the voice of Lieutenant Paris.

Janeway raised an eyebrow. “Humboldt County? What could they want with us?”

“I’m not sure, Captain. They’ve requested a meeting to discuss their proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year.”

Janeway sighed. “Alright, I’ll meet with them. Set up a video conference and notify them that I’ll be joining as soon as possible.”

As she stood up to leave her ready room, Janeway couldn’t help but wonder what possible impact the budget of a small county in California could have on the USS Voyager. But as a Starfleet officer, it was her duty to attend to all matters that affected the well-being of the Federation, no matter how small.

Soon enough, Janeway found herself speaking with the Board of Supervisors of Humboldt County, discussing the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Despite her initial skepticism, Janeway was impressed by the level of detail and care that had gone into crafting the budget. And as the discussion progressed, Janeway found herself making suggestions for how the county could further increase their efficiency and allocate resources more effectively.

By the time the call ended, Janeway had forged a new alliance between the crew of the USS Voyager and the people of Humboldt County. And as she reflected on the experience, Janeway realized that even the smallest matters could have a profound impact on the course of the universe.
